How do I pay my Self Assessment Tax Bill?

You can make payments to your Self Assessment Tax by loggin into your Government Gateway. This is usually your UTR number and Password that was set up when you registered.

You can make regular payments to your account to manage your cashflow. You can also get help if you can't pay your tax bill.

I always advise putting 20% of your turnover away at source. So when you receive that income remove 20% ASAP into a separate account and leave it there. With expenses offsetting against your income you are almost certainly going to have more than enough to pay your bill at the of the year. Especially if you get hit with a Payment on Account in your first year. This can be a shock and unexpected when you first submit your tax return. See my Blog - Payments on Account.

Just a heads up - Online payments will be slow during busy times! Ie. January and July. Don't leave paying your tax to the deadline date. You could end up with a fine if you can't submit it on time!

The Deadlines for paying your tax bill are usually:

  • 31st January - for the prior year ending 5th April.
  • 31st July - for the second payment (Payment on Account)

You can pay by:-

Always check if your payment has been received by logging onto your account. Payments should be should show 3-6 days after payment has been made.
